If you find nothing, go on and check Google and any industry-specific database for similar names. If you find something similar, it may or may not be available-ask someone with experience about it. If you find a live registration for an identical mark in an identical industry, it is almost certainly not available to you. Your first stop should be the USPTO's TESS database. Is the name of your business available for registration? To find out, you should conduct a search of businesses in similar industries. The name of the original business should definitely be registered. Anyone else opening a similar business with a similar name is likely to cause confusion. Do you care if someone two states over opens up a small shop under the same name selling the same thing(s)? On the other end of the end of the continuum is a large business with multiple locations selling goods on-site and online all over the country. What will be the scope of your business?
